Juniors
Edinburgh Cricket Club has a vibrant juniors program that offers cricket for kids of all ages and abilities.
We aim to create an enjoyable and safe environment for juniors to learn and play cricket under the guidance of accredited coaches and senior players. The Club emphasises on fun, equality and inclusion at all levels of junior cricket.
More information about the Edinburgh's approach to junior coaching and participation is available in our Junior Coaching Guidelines.
Junior Cricket
Edinburgh fields teams in the Eastern Cricket Association at all age groups.
New players are welcome and extra coaching is available to help players who have not previously played competitive cricket.
The birthday cut-off date for eligibility for each team is 31 of August (Girls eligibility is one year below their chronological age).
Under 10s and 12s play on Saturday mornings and 14s and 16s on Friday evenings from around 5:15 (or possibly slightly earlier before daylight savings, to make the most of the available light).
A full ECA junior fixture should be available in early October.
Training/Coaching Sessions
All teams in a given age group train together. Under 10 and Under 12 teams train once a week on Wednesday evenings from 4:00pm. Under 14s and Under 16s teams have two training sessions per week (Tuesday's and Thursdays) from 4:30pm and are expected to attend at least one of these.
Under 14 & Under 16 players who have difficulty getting to training on time due to school commitments etc are encouraged stay on after the end of junior training and continue their training with the seniors who train directly after the juniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Parental assistance is needed at training to help the coaches. Cricket knowledge is preferable but not necessary. There are a number of things that you can help with - some as simple as just throwing a ball or helping to rotate the kids taking turns batting in the nets.
Cricket for girls
Edinburgh Cricket Club has a pro-active policy towards girls playing cricket. This starts in Milo in2CRICKET and continues into our junior programme. Members of the womens cricket team are involved in the coaching in our MILO in2CRICKET and our U10 and U12 teams.
Please contact Julie Allan for further information.
Junior Selection and Inclusion Policy
The ECC Junior Selection Policy covers Edinburgh Cricket Club policy on how players are placed into teams at the beginning of each season. The document also covers the Club’s policy toward players playing above from their age group/level.
Edinburgh has a Junior Inclusion Policy in its junior division. The club wishes to see all players given equal opportunity to participate with both bat and ball.
Registration Fees
Junior registration fees are announced in the lead up to each season. Generally, they are around $200 (Full), $100 (concession) and $100 (under 10s). There are no additional match day fees.
However, in line with the club's commitment to inclusion, Edinburgh does not want financial considerations to preclude any junior from playing, so if you believe the registration fees above will cause a problem, please contact the club.
Coaching and Team Management
Edinburgh an accredited coach for each team. These coaches are senior players and interested parents who have volunteered to coach and who have undertaken, or are undertaking, the Level 1 coaching certification via Cricket Victoria or who have equivalent certification. Some have a Level 2 accreditation or its equivalent.
Each team also needs a parent to act as team manager who is responsible for the administrative details of the team (rostering parents tasks, e.g. scoring, food, etc), making sure that everyone knows where to go for the match and keeping the scores up-to-date online. No cricket knowledge is required for this job. Each team must have a team manager in place before the season starts. The team manager is not a very time consuming job and the Club provides ample support..
Parents are expected to take part in the roster of duties organised by the team manager.
